Life's Negotiations

Fully steeped in adulthood, surrounded by decisions, responsibility and people counting on you requires a certain negotiation between what you want and what others want.

Inadvertent miracle-making

'Tis the season for  miracles - both the everyday and spiritual variety. I think it's time to get in on the action, don't you?

"Inadvertent miracle" is a new term for a technique I've employed for some time. It is a cross between stumbling upon a miracle while walking down the street, like you would a heads-up penny, and making a wish on that penny before tossing it into a fountain.

The order of these two events is reversed, however.

Work is the fun you get paid for

Imagine that. Getting paid for doing what you love.

I'm inspired by people who love what they do. Case in point: Global Business School Network. I had the pleasure of meeting with them last week to discuss communication strategies to attract members and corporate leaders.

This group has a tremendous amount of energy and drive to strengthen business education in emerging markets. It is palpable how much each person believes that what they are doing is making a difference. Talk about job satisfaction.

Gorgeous? Says who?

"You are gorgeous" are not words I hear everyday. After several times in the space of a week, I couldn't ignore it as a fluke.

No one would confuse me with Giselle. What's this about?

My limited modeling experience aside...any compliment is about more than the words themselves. There are also the meaning instilled by the speaker, and the one assigned by the listener.

The value of negative space

Drawing negative space, in art class lingo, is about seeing the space between objects as having the same dimensions and depth as the objects themselves.

Negative space of a corkscrewWhen you draw this, it often looks strange. Like a bunch of disconnected shapes.

It's a good exercise because it trains your creative mind to see all that's happening in front of you and recognize that all of it is useful to capturing your subject.

The relationship between mass and space is valuable outside of art too. I was thinking about it after my morning run.
