Monthly Coaching Newsletter
With the economy on everyone's mind, the subject of fear comes up a lot in conversation lately.
I coach clients about dreams they want to make happen. Fear has a clever way of disguising itself as a realistic concern - for your best interest. Maybe it's a possible recession, not knowing enough to make an educated decision, or doubt that you could ever pull off what you want.
Whatever the disguise, it's fear.
Today's topic is about conquering Fear Limbo, that place between going after a goal and listening to all of those nagging arguments that hold you back.
Boo!
Remember the cartoon image of decision-making: a devil on one shoulder and an angel on the other? It's not too far from the truth.
Most of us have these two sides to us. Daring and adventurous measured by cautious and thoughtful. Too much of one is not good, though getting stuck in the middle isn't much fun either.
You want to be your own boss. You want to do something different that you'll remember forever.
But, what about health insurance? What will other people say? What if my plan doesn't work?
Behind Door Number 2...
You have choices when contemplating a big decision and weighing the angel and devil in either ear.
- Stand still. You're safer where you are now.
- Dive right in. You only live once!
- Dabble.
If you're still reading, #2 or #3 must be more interesting to you. (Or you're a committed reader of this newsletter, in which case thanks!)
To make the right choice, it's important to have a sense of what you want and to know exactly what is standing in your way.
Note that one is more vague than the other. Your goals can be fluid to leave room for how your mind will change once you start and for other opportunities that present themselves along the way. Understand the feeling you want to achieve and how you'll know you have reached your goal.
Your fears, however, need more direct attention. Without facing them head-on you're bound to bump up against them again and again.
I spent a previous newsletter and blog talking about the power of facing fear.
No Time Like the Present
There is a difference between weighing the pros and cons of a decision, and letting fear lead you.
My latest blog post discusses how you can make a smart-and-impassioned choice. Consider the factors involved and move forward in a way that serves the part of you that wants-to-go-for-it and takes into account what you need in order to feel safe.
The angel and the devil each get a little and you get them both off your back.
